Arguably the most influential live reggae album ever, “Babylon by Bus”
captures Bob Marley and the Wailers during the European leg of their
“Kaya” tour in the spring of 1978. The success of this set was not
entirely unexpected, however. If the universal and widespread acclaim
of Live!, their first concert recording was an indicator, all involved
knew that a Bob Marley and the Wailers performance contained unique
energies and a vibe all of it’s own. Sharply contrasting the somewhat
pastoral grooves of the “Kaya” album, Babylon by Bus possesses a more
aggressive sound which was a trademark of this particular band. Tyrone
Downie’s progressive rock keyboard flavors on “Exodus,” as well his
judiciously located percussive clavinet accentuations during “Punky
Reggae Party” lock in with Aston Familyman Barrett’s viscous basslines
to create something akin to psychedelic reggae or even along the lines
of Parliament / Funkadelic. Likewise, “Heathen” highlights Anderson’s
explosive guitar leads which are distinctly reminiscent of Eddie Hazel
from his early days with Funkadelic. The lead guitar solos on “Rebel
Music (3 O’Clock Roadblock)” & “Is This Love” also define Al Andersons
innovative and decidedly Western guitar style, as it is seamlessly and
thoroughly integrated with Marley and the Wailers. As with their first
concert album, “Babylon by Bus” highlights material from the band’s
history up to that point. “No More Trouble” is placed in an entirely
new context when linked with “War,” which features lyrics taken from a
United Nations speech given by Haille Selassie I the Ethiopian emperor
considered the father of modern Rastafarianism. Other early tracks,
such as “Kinky Reggae” and “Stir It Up,” prove to be not the only
favorites of concert attendees. More recent offerings of “Is This Love
“Jammin’” & “Exodus” actually garner the most audible support. Without
question, Babylon by Bus is an integral component of any popular music
collection.

Released: 4 May 1973. Highest Chart Positions: UK: -, USA: 171

The Wailers produced their first album for Chris Blackwell in 1973.
Blackwell had given 4,000 to The Wailers to make the album. Many
thought that he would not see any return for his investment, Wow were
they wrong. Blackwell presented The Wailers as an alternative to
mainstream rock. Bob’s locks were really growing and their rebel image
was being played up to help captivate the white audience of hippeish
rock.

The sleevenote that accompanied the album was littered with mistakes,
managing to spell Peter and Bunny’s name incorrectly (Mackinntosh and
Livingstone as opposed to the correct spellings McIntosh & Livingston)
Though the mistakes in the sleevenotes were all but forgotten as this
was the only reggae album to come in a flip-up sleeve shaped like a
Zippo lighter. The album was recorded at Dynamic, Harry J’s, Randy’s
and Kingston Studio’s. Originally the album was scheduled to be a low
key affair it was meant to be a rare LP that was to be released on the
Blue Mountain label. The matrix was to be BML 2001. ‘Baby, Baby We’ve
Got A Date was released on the Blue Mountain label and received strong
reviews in the UK music press.

Musicians: Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Livingston, Aston Barrett,
Carlton Barrett, Earl “Wya” Lindo, Tyrone Townie, Winston Wright, Glen
Adams, Alva Lewis, Willy San Francisco, Chris Karen, Rita Marley and
Marcia Griffiths.

* * *

Concrete Jungle

This is how you introduce yourself to the world. “Concrete Jungle” was
the first song on the album and it starts it off in fine fashion. The
Wailers sounded much more together and much better produced.

Slave Driver

The LP title was derived from this song: “Slave driver, catch a fire,
so you can get burned”. Peter Tosh produces a great scratchy guitar
performance. The Wailers harmonies are again in great force. Is there
a better indictment or a more succinct indictment of Capitalism? The
lines in the song where he says: ‘Good God this illiteracy / is just a
machine to make money’. Keep ‘em stupid, keep ‘em illiterate.

400 Years

Peter Tosh goes back to a track from the “Soul Rebel’s” album. Though
this rendition is of a much slower tempo, and the attitude is a lot
more laid-back and meandering.

Stop That Train

Again Tosh goes back to an old song, this time the version is much
slower and of a gospellish style.

Baby, Baby We’ve Got A Date (Rock It Baby)

This was the first Wailers single on the Island label (UK BlueMountain
it was given the name of “Baby, Baby We’ve Got A Date”), though on the
US Island label it was known as Rock It Baby The song was also pressed
for Tuff Gong as “Rock It Babe”. Female vocals are added most probably
from Rita and Marica.

Stir It Up

This one was from the rocksteady era that has been remade. A year
previous to the release from The Wailers, Johnny Nash had a hit with
it. This version is very neat and precise.

Kinky Reggae

‘Kinky’ was a catchphrase in the early 1970′s in Jamaica. Very similar
to “Natty Dread” in the sense that Bob wanders through various places
meeting various people. During the song Bob is unable to decide if he
wants to live in a kinky part of town or not.

No More Trouble

Carlton Barrett’s one drop drum style is particularly magnificent here
This song was eventually segued into War during live performances, was
always a part of the live shows whether it be on it’s own or coupled
with War. Seguing the two together made perfect sense too.

Midnight Ravers

A rootsy track to close out the album. Magnificent harmonies on this
version. The apocalyptic vision of confused sexes and 10,000 horseless
chariots must have seemed stranged to people not familiar with Bob’s
Book ofRevelations imagery. The song is absolute magic when Bob played
it live. A brilliant song to end The Wailers debut album for Island.

Released: 25 October 1974. Highest Chart Positions: UK: 43, USA: 99

1974 and Bob is now an official solo artist for the first time since
his debut couple of singles for Leslie Kong in ’62. Gone are Peter and
Bunny who went off to start their own solo careers, and so Bob enlists
the help of The I-Threes. The three members of the all female backing
trio were Rita Marley Marcia Griffiths & Judy Mowatt. Bob also brought
in Bernard “Touter” Harvey on keyboards and Al Anderson on lead guitar
The album was again recorded in Jamaica and again at Harry J’s Studio.

While the “Natty Dread” album was not a huge commercial breakthrough,
it was undoubteadly several steps in the right direction. Natty Dread
appeared in the UK album charts for 5 weeks, it’s highest position
being 43. Again Bob went back to some old classics but reworking them,
Lively Up Yourself, Them Belly Full and Bend Down Low. Natty Dread is
a must have record for all Bob Marley fans, with every song being a
timeless classic. Alittle known fact is that there are different album
releases, as while the album was being mixed in London, provisional
mixes of certain songs were put to acetate including some half a dozen
alternate mixes of “Natty Dread” itself, and are now in the hands of a
sound system owner in London

Musicians: Bob Marley Aston Barrett, Carlton Barrett, Bernard “Touter”
Harvey, Al Anderson, The I-Threes (Rita Marley Marcia Griffiths & Judy
Mowatt), Earl “Wya” Lindo, Tyrone Downie, Glen Da Costa, David Madden
and Tommy McCook.

* * *

Lively Up Yourself

Bob opens his first solo LP with an updated version of the old classic
Lively Up Yourself. Like Get Up Stand Up was an appeal for involement
as an opener only without the militancy style.

No Woman No Cry

This was it, the song the world had been waiting for. The best alltime
rock classic, never mind reggae or Bob classics. In a recent poll done
by a music magazine, No Woman No Cry crept in at number 7 in the best
single of all time. If you were to ask anyone to name a Marley song –
this would be their first response. A absolute belter when played live
non-english speaking crowds would sing in unison. This version however
is thiner sounding. It’s a short skank and high on spirit. Bob recalls
the suffering of his past. And how “Georgie would make the fire light”
The writing credit goes to that of Vincent Ford.

Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)

“Them Belly Full” was about physical and spiritual hunger. It had been
prviously released as “Bellyfull” & “Belly Full” on “Tuff Gong” 7inch
singles. The LP version retained much of the rootsiness of the earler
pressings. Bob urges: “Forget your weakness and dance / Forget your
sickness and dance”.

Rebel Music (Three O’Clock Roadblock)

Emphasising reggae’s place as a music of the Jamaicans poor, a role it
still plays today even if it is not Bobs music that performs it. Rebel
Music presents a picture of a Rasta being stopped by the police in a
land where everyone in theory is free.

So Jah Seh

Bob unleashes his Rasta consciousness in a way he hadnt done on record
too often in the past few years. Bob offers the word of God as a proof
that his kids, and by extension, the other children of the poor, shall
not starve for want of the monies class charity. Once again a popping
machine drum takes precidence over a live kit, and set against a tight
dry horn section and the light, skipping melody. Bob urges everyone to
come together and unite “Cause Puss and Dog, they get together / Whats
worng with loving one another”. A born stormer live and one of my all
time favourites.

Natty Dread

The titletrack is the next classic that Bob delivers. Similar to Kinky
Reggae in the sense that Bob moves from street to street, hearing kids
shouting “Natty Dread” at him, which he does not take as an insult by
merely a statement of glorious fact. The song was released as a “Tuff
Gong” 7″ single as Knotty Dread, that version is different to the that
of the album

Bend Down Low

Bob return to rockstready for another look at one of his more enduring
60′s hits. Very similar to the original.

Talkin’ Blues

Another song with a rock-solid skank behind is like Them Belly Full.
Bob depicts himself as a sufferer no roof over his head and only rocks
for his pillow. Also featured is the mind blowing line “Cause I feel
like bombing a church / Now that you know the preacher is lying”. That
one line cause the song a considerable controversual reputation. The
last verse may well have been cut at a later date and pieced in due to
the fact That Bob’s voice seems to change conciderably. Take a listen
and see what you think.

Revolution

A slow chunky skank closes the album. Bob also tells you to “Never
make a politician grant you a favour /They will always want to control
you forever”. Great song to close Bob’s first solo album.

Released: 30 April 1976. Highest Chart Positions: UK: 15, USA: 8

Having acheived a considerable coup with “Live!”, Bob returned to the
studio for his next album, full of songs that would be entirely new to
his now burgeoning white audience, even if some were familiar to
Jamaican listeners. The spirit of the album was very different from
that of “Natty Dread”, the previous studio set, less upbeat and more
mellow. The album produced the classic song “War”. Again the album was
record at Harry J’s but this time Joe Gibb’s studio’s in Kingston was
also used.

Musicians: Bob Marley, Aston Barrett, Carlton Barrett, Tyrone Downie,
“The I-Threes”: Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt, Alvin
Petterson, Earl Smith, Don Kinsey, Al Anderson, Tommy McCook, Glen Da
Costa and David Madden.

* * *

Positive Vibration

Bob declares arguements are prayers to the devil. A nice way to start
the album. This track was also used to open shows, always a great way
to start the show off and no different here on the album.

Roots, Rock, Reggae

Roots, Rock, Reggae borrows a couple of lyrics from “Rainbow Country”
here. It seems as though this is an appeal from Bob to the US music
business, with the line “Play I on the R&B” asking to be a part of the
US black radio programming.

Johnny Was

“Johnny Was” offers a lyric about a son’s death. The story behind the
song is that a Jamaican ghetto rudie is show in the street leaving his
mum wondering where she went wrong, “Wondering how she can work it out
/ Now she knows that the wages of sin is death / Gift of Jah is life”.
Bob seems to be implying that if the kid had been brought up a Rasta
none of this would have happend. The man in question is rumoured to be
Carlton Wilson, brother of singer Delroy, though there is no hard
evidence to confirm or deny this. The song was only played live once
at Tower Theatre in 76, and after listening to it, it makes you wonder
why, as it was such a great performance.

Cry To Me

Again Bob returns to the mid 60′s era. This time with a cover of the
Wailers song from 1966. A great “Cry To Me” acoustic version of this
song is featured on “The Complete Wailers 67-72 Part3 Box Set”. A must
have song.

Want More

A slowbeat onedrop examines greed and jealousy. Some great guitar work
from Don Kinsey is featured. Another one of my favourite songs,
especially live.

Crazy Baldhead

With the banshee wail at the start, Bob is again in militant style.
Lyrics were taken from The Wailers track Freedom Time (circa 1967) and
reworked into Crazy Baldhead. The song was segued into “Running Away”
during live concerts, which like War/No More Trouble made sense.

Who The Cap Fit

Who The Cap Fit is a remake of an obscure Wailers single “Man To Man”
(1971). Bob sings: “Your worst enemy could be your best friend / And
your best friend your worst enemy”.

Night Shift

Another reworking of an old song this time It’s Alright (1970/71). The
song casts Bob as a forklift driver he is refering to his days working
nights at The Chrysler motor plant in Delware, USA 1966, combined with
a warehouse job operating a forklift which he took in the city.

War

Another Marley classic. The lyrics were taken from speech from Emperor
Haile Selassie’s UN 1968 speech. This album version doesn’t quite seem
to have the fire & fierceness of the live performance. This was sequed
with No More Trouble in concert, producing a wonderful song. Bob felt
strongly ebough to make this an anthem.

An interesting note is that the album version is missing 30seconds and
an extra verse, the demo includes the extra 30 seconds and why the LP
version is missing the extra verse is a mystery and crime. It enhances
what is already a powerful and classic track. The missing verse is as
follows:

“Until bigotry and pejudice, malicious,
inhuman self-interest,
Have been replaced by understanding and tolerence and good will,
yeah, war,
Until all Africans stand and speak as free beings,
Equal in the eyes of The Almighty, war, everywhere is war”

Rat Race

The closing song on the album is another gem. “Rat Race” examines the
arms race and finds it a Rat Race. Mentioning collective security on
the road of sudden destruction. Bob declares that “Rasta dont work for
no C.I.A”.

Released: 20 October 1979. Highest Chart Positions: UK: 20, USA: 70

“Survival” was the first in a planned three part series, together with
“Uprising” and “Confrontation”. This was the first album that was cut
at Bob’s “Tuff Gong” studios. The album was originally entitled ‘Black
Survival’. Bob is very serious on the album, gone are the love songs
from Kaya, and in come Bob confrontating his own demons as well as the
worlds. “Ambush In The Night” confronted the assissination attempt on
him. “Zimbabwe” was an ode to the emergent nation casting off the yoke
of white Rhodesia. “Wake Up & Live” exhorted those who accepted a life
of poverty to rise. “One Drop” was a big favourite from the album and
infact makes it the most brought Bob album in the UK. A great album
with so many great tracks it is impossible to single one at as being
the biggest song from the album.

Musicians: Bob Marley, Aston Barrett, Carlton Barrett, The “I-Threes”:
Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths & Judy Mowatt, Tyrone Downie, Earl “Wya”
Lindo, Junior Marvin, Al Anderson, Alvin Patterson, David Madden, Glen
Da Costa, Vin Gordon, Anthony Davis, Errol Brown, Headley Bennett, Val
Douglas and Mikey Richards.

* * *

So Much Trouble In The Wolrd

Bob talks about the way men can be sent into space – an ego trip, but
can’t get things right on earth. Bob also uses the line: “Two Million
miles away from reality” to great effect in the song.

Zimbabwe

As Bob was soon to play at the ‘Zimbabwe Independence Ceremony’, Bob
comes out in support of the apparently imminent retaking of Africa by
black freedom fighters.

Top Ranking

Using a 1970′s catchphrase Bob draws attention to a divide and conquer
mentality in Jamaican politics, and like Jammin implies you can not be
into reggae and be divided. “They don’t want to see us live together”
cries Bob.

Babylon System

Another Rasta song. The lyric casts Babylon as a vampire “sucking the
blood of the sufferers”. Bob urges to “Tell the children the truth”.

Survival

Bob returns to a militant form with “Survival”. Bob chants “We’re the
survivors, the black survivors”. It is performed on a rhythm that
ressembles Exodus. The lines about choosing the right way to live and
quickly as time is running out, were perhaps an indication that Bob
feels his time is draining away.

Africa Unite

Africa Unite as the title suggests, is a plea for the unification of
all black people and Africans, put in Rasta context. Great when played
live, with Bob often adding the line “Marcus Garvey said it, so let it
be done”.

One Drop

One of my all time favourites. Reggae with unity and a great chorus
much like Jammin and Trenchtown Rock amongst others. Carlies excellent
one drop drum pattern is very evident.

Ride Natty Ride

Rasta on a mission, with some great harmonica from Lee Jaffe. The song
also throws in some lyrics from track “Cornerstone”, it also promises
apocalyptic fire. Anoter great song from the album.

Ambush In The Night

The song refers to his own encounter with gunmen from 76. Bob attacks
those who keep the people ignorant and therefor malleable enough to
shoot at each other in the name of pollitical parties. This is yet
another one of my favourite songs.

Wake Up & Live

This is another sub “Exodus” song. Looping one riff with a skin tight
horn section offering some contrast. Bob urges the band forward in a
funky, James Brown style.

Talkin’ Blues is a crucial addition to Bob Marley’s legacy. Like many
posthumous collections, the album is a motley assemblage of previously
unissued concert recordings & studio outtakes linked by short excerpts
from a 1975 Marley interview conducted by Jamaican journalist Dermot
Hussey. But the live material’s uncompromised physical kick and the
narrative unity provided by the interview segments belie the album’s
patchwork makeup. Actually, the seven tracks taken from the Wailers’
legendary October 1973 radio broadcast on KSAN, in San Francisco, are
sufficient cause to celebrate. These vintage, deliciously raw
performances, which feature Tosh and noted Jamaican vocalist Joe Higgs
(subbing for Bunny Wailer, who had just quit the band) are as vital as
those on the epochal 1975 album “Live!” and capture Marley’s riddim
rebellion at a critical juncture, just as he began to take Babylon by
storm.

The light, scattered applause on the KSAN tracks (there are only half
a dozen people in the studio audience) lends an air of poignant,
familial intimacy to the proceedings. The haunting clarity with which
Tosh and Higgs raise their voices in tortured harmony on the “weepin’
and a-wailin’” chorus of “Burnin’ and Lootin’” evokes images of a
destitute family crying in the darkness of a Kingston tenement yard.
On that tune, and on ferocious readings of “Slave Driver” and “Get Up
Stand Up” from the same session, Marley’s voice shivers with tangible
fear and wounded defiance, echoed by the argumentative chatter of Tosh
rhythm guitar, keyboardist Earl “Wire” Lindo percolating clavinet and
the angry drive of the sibling bass-drums backfield, Aston “Familyman”
Barrett and his brother Carlton.

The result is 100-proof rebel music bristling with the same aggressive
spirit and embattled dignity that distinguished the original Wailers’
classic Jamaican singles of the late Sixties and early Seventies. One
Talkin’ Blues number, “Walk the Proud Land,” dates back even further.
First issued in the mid-Sixties as “Rude Boy,” a brisk ska street-punk
anthem, the song is slowed down and torched Chicago-soul-style here,
with Marley, Tosh and Higgs singing like a rougher, Trenchtown version
of the Impressions. Higgs, who was the Wailers’ harmony coach in their
schoolyard days lends a strong Smokey Robinson flavor to “Slave Driver
with his powerful falsetto while Tosh takes a smoldering vocal turn of
his own on “You Can’t Blame the Youth,” a sardonic black man’s view of
revisionist white history (“You teach the youths about the pirate
Morgan / And you said he was a very great man”).

The KSAN recordings effectively marked the end of Marley and Wailers’
first golden era. Within weeks Tosh and Higgs were gone and Marley hit
the crossover trail enriching his sound with bluesy lead guitar fuller
keyboards and the I-Threes’ hearty female hosannas – all elements that
characterized later albums like Natty Dread, from 1974. The alternate
takes of “Talkin’ Blues” and “Bend Down Low” that appear on the album
are a little less polished than the versions on “Natty Dread” but no
less fun. More interesting, though, is an unfinished song from those
sessions, “Ama-Do,” a racy love song that juxtaposes corny lovey-dovey
cliches with the I-Threes’ saucy rejoinder “Do it with your bad self!”

The final track on “Talkin’ Blues” – a searing and previously unissued
version of “I Shot the Sheriff,” recorded during the historic 1975
London shows that yielded the Live! album -simply reaffirms everything
that’s already been said and written about Marley’s mid-1970′s concert
prowess. He is in full warrior vocal rapture here the band stoking the
rhythm fire underneath him with hardened aplomb. Though not as
revelatory as the KSAN material, it is a fitting finale to this album,
vivid proof not only of Marley’s commanding stage presence but of the
long distance he’d come in so short a time. In less than 2 years, Bob
Marley had changed the face and future of reggae. Talkin’ Blues is the
sound of those changes in motion. It is also a tribute befitting king.
