+——————————-[Release Notes]——————————+

Released: 4 May 1973. Highest Chart Positions: UK: -, USA: 171

The Wailers produced their first album for Chris Blackwell in 1973.
Blackwell had given 4,000 to The Wailers to make the album. Many
thought that he would not see any return for his investment, Wow were
they wrong. Blackwell presented The Wailers as an alternative to
mainstream rock. Bob’s locks were really growing and their rebel image
was being played up to help captivate the white audience of hippeish
rock.

The sleevenote that accompanied the album was littered with mistakes,
managing to spell Peter and Bunny’s name incorrectly (Mackinntosh and
Livingstone as opposed to the correct spellings McIntosh & Livingston)
Though the mistakes in the sleevenotes were all but forgotten as this
was the only reggae album to come in a flip-up sleeve shaped like a
Zippo lighter. The album was recorded at Dynamic, Harry J’s, Randy’s
and Kingston Studio’s. Originally the album was scheduled to be a low
key affair it was meant to be a rare LP that was to be released on the
Blue Mountain label. The matrix was to be BML 2001. ‘Baby, Baby We’ve
Got A Date was released on the Blue Mountain label and received strong
reviews in the UK music press.

Musicians: Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Livingston, Aston Barrett,
Carlton Barrett, Earl “Wya” Lindo, Tyrone Townie, Winston Wright, Glen
Adams, Alva Lewis, Willy San Francisco, Chris Karen, Rita Marley and
Marcia Griffiths.

* * *

Concrete Jungle

This is how you introduce yourself to the world. “Concrete Jungle” was
the first song on the album and it starts it off in fine fashion. The
Wailers sounded much more together and much better produced.

Slave Driver

The LP title was derived from this song: “Slave driver, catch a fire,
so you can get burned”. Peter Tosh produces a great scratchy guitar
performance. The Wailers harmonies are again in great force. Is there
a better indictment or a more succinct indictment of Capitalism? The
lines in the song where he says: ‘Good God this illiteracy / is just a
machine to make money’. Keep ‘em stupid, keep ‘em illiterate.

400 Years

Peter Tosh goes back to a track from the “Soul Rebel’s” album. Though
this rendition is of a much slower tempo, and the attitude is a lot
more laid-back and meandering.

Stop That Train

Again Tosh goes back to an old song, this time the version is much
slower and of a gospellish style.

Baby, Baby We’ve Got A Date (Rock It Baby)

This was the first Wailers single on the Island label (UK BlueMountain
it was given the name of “Baby, Baby We’ve Got A Date”), though on the
US Island label it was known as Rock It Baby The song was also pressed
for Tuff Gong as “Rock It Babe”. Female vocals are added most probably
from Rita and Marica.

Stir It Up

This one was from the rocksteady era that has been remade. A year
previous to the release from The Wailers, Johnny Nash had a hit with
it. This version is very neat and precise.

Kinky Reggae

‘Kinky’ was a catchphrase in the early 1970′s in Jamaica. Very similar
to “Natty Dread” in the sense that Bob wanders through various places
meeting various people. During the song Bob is unable to decide if he
wants to live in a kinky part of town or not.

No More Trouble

Carlton Barrett’s one drop drum style is particularly magnificent here
This song was eventually segued into War during live performances, was
always a part of the live shows whether it be on it’s own or coupled
with War. Seguing the two together made perfect sense too.

Midnight Ravers

A rootsy track to close out the album. Magnificent harmonies on this
version. The apocalyptic vision of confused sexes and 10,000 horseless
chariots must have seemed stranged to people not familiar with Bob’s
Book ofRevelations imagery. The song is absolute magic when Bob played
it live. A brilliant song to end The Wailers debut album for Island.
